Is Vaping Haram?

Is vaping or using e-cigarettes halal or haram in Islam?

Islamic Ruling

Most contemporary Islamic scholars hold that vaping/e-cigarettes are haram or strongly disliked (makruh tahrim) for the same reasons as cigarette smoking, with additional concerns.

Reasons for prohibition:
1. Health harm: The Quran and Sunnah prohibit harming oneself. Vaping is medically established as harmful to the lungs and cardiovascular system.
2. Analogy to smoking: If smoking is haram (as most contemporary scholars rule), vaping — which delivers nicotine and chemical aerosols — is equally or more concerning.
3. Addiction: Creating dependency on a substance is considered harmful to one's autonomy and rational faculties.

The ruling on smoking: While classical scholars didn't address cigarettes, the majority of contemporary scholars including major fatwas from al-Azhar, Dar al-Ifta (Egypt), Saudi Arabia's Permanent Committee, and OIC rule cigarettes haram due to proven health harm.

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 2:195

And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction.

  • Quran 7:157

[The Prophet] who makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil...

Hadith Evidence

  • Sunan Ibn Majah 2340

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "There should be no harming of oneself or others.""
