Is Gelatin Halal?

Is gelatin halal? What about gelatin in food products?

Islamic Ruling

The permissibility of gelatin in Islam depends on its source.

Pork-derived gelatin: Haram by consensus of all four madhabs. Pork (and all its derivatives) is explicitly forbidden in the Quran.

Beef/cattle gelatin from non-halal slaughter: Disputed among scholars. Some say impermissible because the animal was not slaughtered Islamically. Others allow it on the grounds that istihalah (transformation of substance) renders it permissible.

Halal-slaughtered bovine gelatin: Permissible.

Fish/marine gelatin: Permissible, as fish is halal without requiring special slaughter.

Practical guidance: When in doubt, look for products labeled 'halal certified' or 'kosher' (as kosher gelatin excludes pork), or choose products that specify 'fish gelatin' or 'plant-based gelatin' (agar-agar).

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 2:173

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah.

Hadith Evidence

  • Sahih Muslim 1934

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every intoxicant is prohibited, and Allah has forbidden the trading of every intoxicant.""

Views of the Four Madhabs

Hanafi

Pork gelatin is haram. Istihalah (transformation) is accepted — if the substance completely transforms into something new, it may be permissible. Scholars differ on whether industrial processing counts.

Maliki

Pork gelatin haram. Does not accept istihalah in most cases.

Shafi'i

Pork gelatin haram. Stricter on istihalah — the original haram source remains haram even after transformation.

Hanbali

Pork gelatin haram. Similar to Shafi'i on istihalah.

Scholar's View

The Islamic Fiqh Academy (OIC) has ruled that pork-derived gelatin remains haram regardless of transformation.

This ruling is presented for educational purposes based on established scholarly sources. For matters specific to your personal situation, please consult a qualified Islamic scholar (mufti) from your madhab.
