Understanding Al-Mumit
Al-Mumit is the Bringer of Death, the One who causes to die. The root *m-w-t* relates to death. As Al-Mumit, Allah alone decrees and brings about the death of every living thing, at the time and in the manner He has appointed. Death is not random, not ultimately in the hands of any cause or any person, and not the final end — it is a transition decreed by Al-Mumit, the companion-name of Al-Muhyi (the Giver of Life). The same Lord who grants life is the One who takes it back.
Death in His Hand Alone
No soul dies except by Allah's permission, at its appointed term: *"And it is not for a soul to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined"* (Qur'an 3:145). This places death entirely under His wisdom. *"And it is He who gives life and causes death (Huwa amata wa aḥya)"* (Qur'an 53:44). Recognising Al-Mumit frees the believer from misplaced fears: no enemy, illness, or accident can take a life one moment before its decreed time, nor delay it one moment after.
The Qur'anic Foundation
Allah presents life and death as a deliberate test: *"He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed"* (Qur'an 67:2) — strikingly mentioning death *before* life, for death gives life its weight and urgency. And the universal truth: *"Every soul will taste death. And you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection"* (Qur'an 3:185).
Remembering Death, Living Well
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged frequent remembrance of death — "the destroyer of pleasures" — not to breed gloom, but to inspire urgency and sincerity. The one who remembers Al-Mumit lives more deliberately: settling debts and disputes, hastening to repent, valuing time, and prioritising what matters for the Hereafter. For the believer, death loses its terror — it becomes the doorway to meeting their Lord — while it spurs them to prepare well for the journey.
Living by Al-Mumit
- Remember death often. Let it sharpen your priorities and soften your heart.
- Prepare to meet Him. Hasten repentance, resolve disputes, and fill your time with what benefits the Hereafter.
- Release the fear of timing. No one dies before their term; live courageously and trust His decree.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Mumit, in whose hand alone is death, grant me a good ending upon faith, let my last words be the testimony of Your oneness, and make death a gateway to Your mercy rather than a cause of regret."*
