Understanding Al-Hakam

Al-Hakam is the Judge — the supreme Arbiter whose judgement is absolute, binding, and beyond appeal. The root *ḥ-k-m* carries the meanings of judging, deciding, restraining (as a bridle restrains a horse), and wisdom. Al-Hakam is the One who decides between all matters with perfect justice and prevents wrongdoing from going unanswered. His ruling is never mistaken, never unjust, never overturned. Where human judges err, are deceived, or are swayed, Al-Hakam judges with complete knowledge of every fact, every motive, and every hidden truth.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an presents Allah as the only judge worth turning to: *"Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge (ḥakaman) while it is He who has revealed to you the Book explained in detail?"* (Qur'an 6:114). It affirms the perfection of His judgement: *"Is not Allah the most just of judges (bi-aḥkami al-ḥakimin)?"* (Qur'an 95:8). And it promises the final arbitration: *"Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which you used to differ"* (Qur'an 22:69).

A Lesson from the Sunnah

This name carries a beautiful prophetic teaching about humility before Allah's authority. A companion was nicknamed *Abu al-Hakam* ("father of the judge"). The Prophet ﷺ said to him, *"Indeed, Allah is Al-Hakam (the Judge), and to Him belongs judgement. Why are you called Abu al-Hakam?"* He explained that his people would come to him to settle disputes. The Prophet ﷺ admired this and instead honoured him through his children's names (Sunan Abi Dawud 4955, Sunan an-Nasa'i). The lesson is clear: ultimate judgement is Allah's alone, and even a respected arbiter holds only a borrowed, limited authority.

What This Name Plants in the Heart

Al-Hakam brings profound consolation to anyone who has suffered injustice. Courts can fail, the guilty can escape, and the innocent can be condemned — but no case escapes Al-Hakam. Every wrong concealed from human eyes is recorded, and the final, flawless verdict awaits. This frees the believer from bitterness and the urge for unjust revenge: they entrust their case to the most just of judges. It also calls the believer to *submit to Allah's rulings* — to accept His commands and prohibitions as the wise decree of the Judge, rather than seeking judgement in desires or man-made systems that contradict His law.

Living by Al-Hakam

- Take your grievances to the Judge. When wronged, entrust the matter to Al-Hakam rather than consuming yourself with bitterness.
- Submit to His rulings. Accept Allah's commands as the verdict of the wisest, most just Judge.
- Judge justly yourself. Whenever you must decide between people, fear Al-Hakam and rule with fairness.
