A Name to Know Allah By

Al-Jabbar is a name that holds two meanings in a single word, and grasping both reveals something beautiful about Allah. On one side, it means the Compeller — the One whose will is irresistible, who imposes His command upon creation, and whom nothing and no one can resist. On the other side, the root *j-b-r* is the very root used in Arabic for *mending a broken bone* (*jabr*). From this, scholars drew the second meaning: Al-Jabbar is the One who mends the broken, restores the shattered, and sets right what has fallen apart.

So this single name unites overwhelming might with gentle repair. The same Lord whose decree no power can resist is the Lord who stoops to mend a broken heart.

The Qur'anic Foundation

Al-Jabbar appears in the chain of majestic names: *"...Al-Aziz (the Exalted in Might), Al-Jabbar (the Compeller), Al-Mutakabbir (the Supreme). Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him"* (Qur'an 59:23). Its position among names of grandeur and majesty emphasises the dimension of irresistible power and greatness.

In the Sunnah, the Prophet ﷺ would glorify Allah with this name in the most humble postures of prayer, reciting in his bowing and prostration the words of magnification that include *"al-jabarut"* — the realm of overwhelming might (Sahih Muslim 772). At the very moment the servant lowers their forehead to the ground, they affirm the boundless power of the One they worship.

The Compeller Whose Will Prevails

To know Allah as the Compeller is to accept, with peace rather than resistance, that His decree will come to pass. *"When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is"* (Qur'an 2:117). Human plans bend and break; the will of Al-Jabbar never does. For the arrogant tyrant, this is a humbling truth — all their compelling is borrowed and will be stripped away. For the believer, it is a source of calm surrender: the affairs of the universe rest in the hands of One whose wisdom and power are complete.

The Restorer of the Broken

The gentler meaning of Al-Jabbar is a balm for anyone who has felt shattered. There is a well-known supplication taught in the tradition, said when rising from prostration: *"Rabbi-ghfir li, war-hamni, wajburni..."* — "My Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, and mend me" — drawing directly on the meaning of *jabr*. The one who turns to Al-Jabbar in grief, loss, or failure turns to the One who specialises in restoration: mending broken hearts, restoring lost dignity, and rebuilding lives that have collapsed.

Living by Al-Jabbar

- Surrender to His decree. When matters move beyond your control, find peace in the will of the One no power can resist.
- Bring your brokenness to Him. Whatever has been shattered in your life, ask Al-Jabbar to mend it — this is precisely what the name promises.
- Mend others. Become a restorer in your own circle: reconcile the estranged, comfort the grieving, and lift those who have fallen.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Jabbar, whose will none can resist and who mends all that is broken, set right what has shattered in my life, restore my heart, and make me a means of mending for others."*
