Meaning and Linguistic Origin

Al-Basir is the All-Seeing — the One who sees all things with perfect, comprehensive vision. The root *b-ṣ-r* relates to sight, perception, and insight. Allah's seeing is absolute: it is not limited by darkness, distance, or barriers, and it perceives not only outward appearances but inner realities. He sees the deed and the motive behind it, the public act and the secret one, the movement of the smallest creature in the deepest dark. Nothing is hidden from Al-Basir.

The Comprehensiveness of His Sight

The Qur'an conveys the totality of this vision: *"He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal"* (Qur'an 40:19). Even the fleeting, treacherous glance — the look one hopes no one notices — is fully seen by Al-Basir, along with the secrets buried in the heart. Allah also points to His sight as the sign of His mastery over creation: *"Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware?"* — and elsewhere invites reflection: *"...the One who created seven heavens in layers... So return your vision; do you see any breaks?... Your vision would return to you humbled and fatigued"* (Qur'an 67:3–4). Our sight is weak and limited; His is perfect and all-encompassing.

Joined to His Hearing

Al-Basir is the constant companion of As-Sami' (the All-Hearing) in the Qur'an: *"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing (as-Sami' al-Basir)"* (Qur'an 42:11). When Allah took His Messenger ﷺ on the Night Journey, He sealed the verse with this name: *"Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing"* (Qur'an 17:1) — He witnessed every moment of that journey. Together the two names assure us that Allah perceives the whole of our existence.

What This Name Plants in the Heart

To live before Al-Basir is to live in *ihsan* — the excellence the Prophet ﷺ defined as *"worshipping Allah as though you see Him, for though you do not see Him, He surely sees you"* (Sahih Muslim 8). This awareness reforms private conduct: a person who truly believes they are always seen behaves the same in solitude as in company. It also comforts the wronged: every injustice done in secret, every tear shed unseen, is fully witnessed by Al-Basir, who will bring all of it into account.

Living by Al-Basir

- Mind your private deeds. Act in solitude as one fully seen by Allah.
- Lower your gaze. Since He sees "what deceives the eyes," guard your own glances and intentions.
- Take comfort. Your unseen patience and quiet good are never missed by the All-Seeing.
