Meaning and Roots
Al-Muqit is the Maintainer, the Nourisher, the Sustainer. The root *q-w-t* relates to *qut* — the nourishment and sustenance that maintains life. Al-Muqit is the One who provides every creature with exactly what it needs to subsist, who maintains all things in existence, and who has full power and oversight over everything. Scholars gathered several meanings under this name: the Provider of sustenance, the Maintainer who preserves and upholds, the Powerful who has authority over all, and the Witness who watches over all.
The Sustainer of Every Need
While Ar-Razzaq (the Provider) speaks to the broad gift of provision, Al-Muqit carries a more intimate nuance: the careful apportioning of the precise nourishment each creature requires — not too much, not too little, delivered at the right time. From the nutrients in a seed to the milk for an infant to the strength for a labouring body, Al-Muqit measures out maintenance with perfect knowledge of every need. *"And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage"* (Qur'an 11:6).
The Qur'anic Foundation
The name appears in a verse about responsibility and recompense: *"Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share of it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a portion of it. And ever is Allah, over all things, a Keeper (Muqit)"* (Qur'an 4:85). The closing description affirms that Allah maintains, witnesses, and has power over all things — nothing is outside His sustaining oversight.
Power and Provision Together
What makes Al-Muqit distinctive is the union of *nourishment* with *power and oversight*. Allah does not merely wish provision for His creatures; He has complete power to deliver it and complete knowledge of where it must go. This assures the believer that their maintenance is in the hands of One who both cares for the need and commands the means to meet it.
Practical Reflections
- Trust your Maintainer. The One who feeds the infant in the womb and the bird in the sky maintains you too — pursue the means and rest your heart in Him.
- Be a means of maintenance for others. Feed the hungry and support the needy, reflecting the care of Al-Muqit.
- Notice the precision of His care. Reflect on how exactly your needs are met, and let it deepen gratitude.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Muqit, who nourishes every creature and maintains all things by Your power, sustain me with what is good and lawful, maintain me upon Your obedience, and make me a means of sustenance and care for others."*
