Understanding Al-Hadi

Al-Hadi is the Guide — the One who guides whom He wills to the truth and leads every creature to what benefits it. The root *h-d-y* means to guide, to show the way, to lead rightly. As Al-Hadi, Allah guides on every level: He guides all creatures by instinct to their needs, He guides humanity through messengers and revelation, and — most preciously — He guides hearts to faith, placing the light of guidance within whom He chooses.

The Only Giver of Guidance

A crucial truth is that *true guidance of the heart* belongs to Allah alone. Even the Prophet ﷺ could convey the message but could not place faith in a heart: *"Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He is most knowing of the rightly guided"* (Qur'an 28:56) — revealed regarding his beloved uncle who died upon disbelief. We can call, teach, and advise, but the gift of guidance itself comes from Al-Hadi.

The Qur'anic Foundation

Allah affirms His role as Guide of the believers: *"...And indeed, Allah is the Guide (la-Hādi) of those who have believed to a straight path"* (Qur'an 22:54). *"And sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper"* (Qur'an 25:31). And the prayer every Muslim repeats at least seventeen times a day is a plea for guidance: *"Guide us to the straight path"* (Qur'an 1:6).

Guidance Is Sought, Not Assumed

Because guidance is a continual gift from Al-Hadi — not a one-time possession — the believer never takes it for granted. We ask for it constantly in *al-Fatihah*, recognising that hearts can drift and that staying guided requires Allah's ongoing help. This breeds humility (we did not guide ourselves) and gratitude (faith is His gift), and it drives us to keep asking: *"Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us"* (Qur'an 3:8).

Living by Al-Hadi

- Ask for guidance constantly. Mean *"ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim"* in every prayer, and ask to be kept firm upon it.
- Convey, but rely on Him for hearts. Call others to good with sincerity, leaving the gift of guidance to Al-Hadi.
- Be grateful for faith. Recognise your guidance as His gift, not your achievement.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Hadi, the only Guide of hearts, guide me to the straight path and keep me firm upon it, let not my heart deviate after You have guided it, and make me a means of guidance for others."*
