A Name to Know Allah By
Al-Khabir is the All-Aware — the One who possesses *khibrah*, an intimate, penetrating awareness of the innermost reality of all things. The root *kh-b-r* means inner knowledge, expertise, and acquaintance with the hidden truth of a matter, not merely its surface. While Al-Alim (the All-Knowing) affirms that Allah knows everything, Al-Khabir emphasises that He knows the *depths* — the secret cause, the concealed motive, the reality beneath the appearance. Nothing presents Allah with a mere exterior; He is fully acquainted with what lies within.
Awareness of the Hidden
The Qur'an ties this name to the fact that the Creator inevitably knows His creation from the inside out: *"Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware (al-Latif al-Khabir)?"* (Qur'an 67:14). The Maker of the heart is aware of every secret within it. And on the Day when graves are scattered and hearts are laid bare, *"Indeed, their Lord, with them, that Day, is fully Aware (la-khabir)"* (Qur'an 100:11) — fully acquainted with everything they concealed.
The Awareness That Levels All Pretence
A profound social teaching attaches to this name. After establishing that people are made into nations and tribes *"that you may know one another,"* Allah declares the true measure of worth and seals it with Al-Khabir: *"Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware (alim khabir)"* (Qur'an 49:13). Because Allah is aware of the inner reality, He is not impressed by outward markers — wealth, lineage, status, appearance. He sees the hidden truth of taqwa in the heart, which is the only ranking that counts before Him.
What This Name Plants in the Heart
To know Al-Khabir is to abandon all pretence. There is no value in projecting an image to people when the One who matters most is aware of the reality behind it. This drives sincerity and uproots hypocrisy and showing-off (*riya'*). It also brings comfort: your hidden struggles, the private effort no one sees, the good intention behind a deed that looked ordinary — all are fully appreciated by Al-Khabir. And it instils caution: since Allah knows the inner cause of every act, the believer pays attention not only to *what* they do but *why* they do it.
Living by Al-Khabir
- Mind your motives. Purify the intentions behind your deeds, for the All-Aware knows them.
- Drop the mask. Stop performing for people; live for the One acquainted with your reality.
- Take heart. Your unseen sincerity and quiet striving are fully known and valued by Al-Khabir.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Khabir, who is aware of the depths of my heart, purify my intentions, correct the inner reality You know of me, and make my hidden self more beloved to You than my public self."*
