A Lord Who Appreciates

Ash-Shakur is the Most Appreciative — the One who responds to His servants' obedience with gratitude, acknowledging and richly rewarding even the smallest good deed. It is a profoundly moving name: the Creator, who needs nothing from anyone, describes Himself as *grateful* to His servants. Of course, Allah's "gratitude" is unlike a creature's — He gains nothing — yet He treats the believer's effort as though it deserves thanks, multiplying its reward far beyond its worth.

The Meaning of Divine Gratitude

The root *sh-k-r* means to recognise and acknowledge good and to respond to it. When applied to Allah, *shukr* means He accepts little and gives much; He praises His servants for what He Himself enabled them to do; and He never overlooks an act of devotion, however hidden or small. A whispered word of remembrance, a coin given quietly in charity, a temptation resisted in secret — all are noted and appreciated by Ash-Shakur.

Evidence from Revelation

Allah pairs forgiveness with appreciation: *"That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative (Ghafur Shakur)"* (Qur'an 35:30). And He promises that loaning Him even a little is met with multiplication and pardon: *"If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative and Forbearing (Shakur Halim)"* (Qur'an 64:17). His appreciation is generous beyond proportion: *"...and We will increase the doer of good in his good deed"* (Qur'an 42:23).

Small Deeds, Boundless Reward

A liberating lesson of Ash-Shakur is that no good deed is ever "too small to bother." The Prophet ﷺ taught that even removing a harmful object from the path is charity, that a smile is charity, and that a single date given sincerely can shield one from the Fire. Because the One who rewards is Ash-Shakur, the *sincerity* of a deed matters far more than its size — He magnifies the little that is offered purely for Him.

Becoming Grateful to the Grateful

To know Ash-Shakur is to be inspired to gratitude oneself — toward Allah and toward people. Allah loves grateful servants, and gratitude is itself a cause of increase: *"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you"* (Qur'an 14:7). The believer also reflects this name by appreciating others; the Prophet ﷺ said, *"Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah"* (Sunan Abi Dawud 4811).

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Ash-Shakur, who rewards the least good with boundless generosity, accept my small deeds, multiply them by Your grace, and make me grateful to You and to Your creation."*
