Two Meanings in One Name

Al-Hasib holds two complementary meanings, both flowing from the root *ḥ-s-b* (to count, to reckon, to suffice). On one side, Al-Hasib is the Reckoner — the One who keeps a perfect account of every deed, word, and intention, and who will bring everyone to a flawless reckoning. On the other side, *ḥasb* means "enough," so Al-Hasib is also the Sufficient — the One who is entirely enough for whoever depends on Him. Accountability and reassurance live together in this single name.

The One Who Suffices

The reassuring face of Al-Hasib appears wherever the Qur'an says *"Allah is sufficient" (kafa billahi)*. *"And sufficient is Allah as Accountant (ḥasiba)"* (Qur'an 4:6). For the one who fears Allah, this sufficiency becomes a lifeline: *"And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him (fa-huwa ḥasbuh)"* (Qur'an 65:3). When the believer feels overwhelmed, outnumbered, or unsupported, the knowledge that Allah Himself is *enough* dissolves the fear.

The One Who Takes Account

The sobering face of Al-Hasib is the reality of the final reckoning. Allah keeps a precise account: *"And sufficient is Allah as Accountant"* (Qur'an 33:39), and *"Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant (ḥasiba)"* (Qur'an 4:86). Nothing is too small to be counted, and nothing is forgotten. This is why the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous urged: *"Bring yourselves to account before you are brought to account"* — to examine our own deeds now, while there is still time to correct them.

A Word of Reassurance

When the Prophet ﷺ met rejection, Allah taught him a declaration of total sufficiency that believers have repeated ever since: *"But if they turn away, say: Allah is sufficient for me (Ḥasbiya Allah); there is no deity except Him. Upon Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne"* (Qur'an 9:129). To say *Ḥasbiya Allah* is to affirm that the very One who will reckon my deeds is also the One who is *enough* for me — so I need fear no shortfall, seek no other guarantor, and lean on no one besides Him.

Living Before the Reckoner

To hold both meanings is to live with balance: the awe of accountability and the peace of sufficiency. The believer takes their deeds seriously, knowing they will be reckoned, yet never despairs or feels alone, knowing Al-Hasib is enough for them. This name frees the heart from needing the approval, support, or validation of people — for the One who will judge is also the One who suffices. The Prophet ﷺ also urged self-examination now: *"Take account of yourselves before you are taken to account, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you"* — practising the reckoning of Al-Hasib upon ourselves while there is still time to mend.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Hasib, who keeps perfect account and is sufficient for those who trust You, make my reckoning easy, overlook my shortcomings, and be enough for me against every fear and every need."*
