Is the Hijab Obligatory for Muslim Women?

Is wearing the hijab (head covering) an obligation in Islam?

Islamic Ruling

The consensus of classical Islamic scholars across all four madhabs is that covering the hair is an obligation (fard) for Muslim women who have reached puberty in the presence of non-mahram men.

Quranic evidence: Quran 24:31 commands women to draw their head coverings (khumur) over their chests. Quran 33:59 instructs believing women to draw their outer garments over themselves.

What must be covered (awrah for women in front of non-mahram men): All of the body except the face and hands (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki), or including the face (a stricter Hanbali view).

Contemporary challenges: Some modernist scholars argue the Quranic verses are contextual to 7th-century Arab culture. This remains a minority scholarly position not accepted by mainstream Islamic jurisprudence.

Important note: Wearing or not wearing the hijab is between a Muslim woman and Allah. Judgment, coercion, or condemnation of Muslim women are contrary to Islamic ethics. The obligation exists; its enforcement is not the role of other Muslims.

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head coverings over their chests.

  • Quran 33:59

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.

Hadith Evidence

  • Sunan Abu Dawud 4104

"Aisha narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "O Asma, when a girl reaches puberty, it is not proper that anything should be seen of her except this and this — pointing to his face and hands.""

Hanafi

Obligatory; awrah includes all except face and hands.

Maliki

Shafi'i

Obligatory; awrah includes all except face and hands.

Hanbali

Scholar's View

Al-Nawawi (Shafi'i): "The scholars are in agreement (ijma) that a free Muslim woman must cover everything except the face and hands."
