Is Growing a Beard Obligatory for Muslim Men?
Is the beard wajib (obligatory) or sunnah for Muslim men?
Islamic Ruling
Evidence: The Prophet ﷺ explicitly commanded Muslims to let the beard grow and trim the moustache, contrasting Muslims with the Magians and polytheists who shaved their beards.
The minority permissive view: Some contemporary scholars rule that trimming or shaving the beard is disliked (makruh) but not sinful, based on weak reasoning. This remains outside mainstream scholarship.
Length: The Prophet ﷺ used to trim beards that grew longer than a fistful. The fistful length as minimum is the position of most madhabs.
Context: A Muslim who shaves his beard due to workplace pressure, ignorance, or cultural norms should seek forgiveness and strive to comply while also advocating for their religious rights.
