Understanding Al-Muqsit

Al-Muqsit is the Equitable, the One who establishes *qist* — fairness, equity, and balance. The root *q-s-ṭ* (in this form) means to act with justice and to give each party their full due. While Al-Adl affirms that Allah is justice itself and never wrongs anyone, Al-Muqsit emphasises His *active establishing of equity* — restoring balance, judging fairly between disputing parties, and giving everyone exactly what they are owed, no more and no less.

Justice That Restores Balance

The equity of Al-Muqsit is restorative. Where there has been imbalance — the strong exploiting the weak, the wrongdoer escaping while the wronged suffers — Al-Muqsit sets the scales right. On the Day of Judgement, He will establish perfect equity so that no one is treated unjustly: every right will be returned to its owner, even rights settled between animals. His fairness reaches into every relationship and every transaction.

The Qur'anic Foundation

Allah declares His love for the equitable: *"...And act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly (al-muqsiṭin)"* (Qur'an 5:42, 49:9, 60:8). And His own perfect equity is affirmed at the heart of belief: *"Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and the angels and those of knowledge — maintaining justice (qā'iman bil-qisṭ). There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise"* (Qur'an 3:18). The Prophet ﷺ said the just (*al-muqsiṭun*) will be upon pulpits of light beside Allah on the Day of Judgement (Sahih Muslim 1827).

The Equity Allah Loves

This name is both a comfort and a command. It comforts the wronged: Al-Muqsit will restore every imbalance with perfect equity. And it commands the believer: since Allah *loves* those who act justly, fairness becomes a path to His love — fairness in judging between people, in dealings and transactions, in the home, and even toward those we dislike.

Living by Al-Muqsit

- Be scrupulously fair. Give everyone their due in your dealings, judgements, and relationships — fairness is beloved to Allah.
- Be just even toward opponents. The Qur'an commands justice even with those you dislike (Qur'an 5:8).
- Trust the restoration of balance. When wronged, rest in knowing Al-Muqsit will set every scale right.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Muqsit, who establishes perfect equity and loves the just, make me fair in all my dealings, give me my due from Your justice tempered by Your mercy, and restore balance to all who have been wronged."*
