Understanding Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram

Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram means the Possessor of Majesty and Honour (or Bounty). It unites two grand qualities: *al-Jalal* — majesty, grandeur, and awe-inspiring greatness; and *al-Ikram* — honour, generosity, and bountiful kindness. This name therefore gathers in one phrase the two great dimensions of Allah: the attributes that inspire *awe* (His power, greatness, justice) and the attributes that inspire *love and hope* (His mercy, generosity, and honour toward His servants).

Majesty and Generosity United

What makes this name so complete is the *union* it expresses. A being might be majestic but distant, or generous but lowly. Allah is supremely majestic *and* abundantly generous at once. His grandeur never makes Him stingy, and His generosity never diminishes His majesty. He humbles the heart with awe and lifts it with hope — both at the same time, through the same Lord.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The name appears twice in Surah Ar-Rahman, the chapter of mercy. First, in the context of all things perishing: *"And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour (Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram)"* (Qur'an 55:27). And as the chapter's closing seal: *"Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour"* (Qur'an 55:78). The Prophet ﷺ encouraged persistently invoking Allah with this name: *"Cling to (the supplication) 'Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram'"* (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa'i).

Between Awe and Hope

The believer's heart is meant to live between two wings: *fear/awe* of Allah's majesty and *hope/love* for His honour and generosity. Too much awe without hope leads to despair; too much hope without awe leads to complacency. Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram holds them perfectly together, training the heart to revere Allah's grandeur while running to His generosity.

Living by This Name

- Balance awe and hope. Revere His majesty and trust His generosity — let neither overwhelm the other.
- Invoke Him by it. Make *"Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram"* a regular part of your supplications.
- Honour what He honours. Reflect *ikrām* by being generous and honouring others — especially guests, parents, and the needy.

A Supplication

*"Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram — O Owner of Majesty and Honour — fill my heart with awe of Your grandeur and hope in Your generosity, honour me with Your nearness, and let me live between reverence and hope until I meet You."*
