Understanding Al-Muqaddim
Al-Muqaddim is the Expediter, the One who brings forward and gives precedence. The root *q-d-m* means to put forward, advance, or prioritise. As Al-Muqaddim, Allah advances whom and what He wills: He raises some people ahead of others in rank, faith, and honour; He brings certain events forward in time; and He gives precedence to whatever His wisdom selects. Its companion-name is Al-Mu'akhkhir (the Delayer) — together they affirm that the ordering of all things, in rank and in time, rests entirely with Allah.
The One Who Brings Forward
Al-Muqaddim is the One who advanced the prophets above other people, who brings forward in faith and good deeds whom He wills, and who placed some creation ahead of others in honour and station. *"...We raise in degrees whom We will"* (Qur'an 6:83). Whatever is "first," "foremost," or "advanced" — among people, nations, or events — was placed there by Al-Muqaddim, with perfect wisdom behind every precedence.
The Sunnah Foundation
This name (with its pair) is preserved in a beautiful supplication the Prophet ﷺ made during the night prayer. After lengthy praise, he would say: *"...You are the First (al-Muqaddim) to bring forward and You are the Last (al-Mu'akhkhir) to put back; there is no deity except You"* (Sahih al-Bukhari 1120, Sahih Muslim 769). The names live on the tongue of the worshipper in the depths of the night, affirming that all advancement and delay are in Allah's hands alone.
Nothing Comes Early or Late by Accident
To know Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu'akhkhir together is to find peace with the *timing* of life. What arrives early in your life — a success, a test, a turning point — did not come a moment before its wisely-appointed time; Al-Muqaddim advanced it precisely when it should come. There are no accidents of timing. This frees the heart from the anxiety of "too soon" or "too late," replacing it with trust in a perfectly ordered decree.
Living by Al-Muqaddim
- Trust the timing of what comes early. What Allah brings forward in your life is on time by His wisdom.
- Put forward good deeds. Reflect this name by hastening to good and sending ahead deeds for your Hereafter (*"what they have sent forward,"* Qur'an 36:12).
- Prioritise what Allah prioritises. Give precedence in your life to what He has made foremost — faith and obedience.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Muqaddim, who brings forward whom and what You will, advance me in faith and good deeds, let me send forward a record that gladdens me, and make me content with all that Your wisdom brings forward in my life."*
