Understanding Al-Muntaqim

Al-Muntaqim is the Avenger, the One who exacts just retribution. The root *n-q-m* means to punish or take retribution for wrongdoing. As Al-Muntaqim, Allah brings deserved consequences upon those who persist in evil, injustice, and rejection of the truth without repenting. Importantly, the scholars stressed that this name is mentioned in the Qur'an in a restrained way — always in the context of the *criminals* and *the unrepentant* — and is best understood alongside Allah's mercy and the open door of repentance. His vengeance is never tyranny; it is perfect justice against those who refuse to turn back.

Justice Against Unrepentant Wrongdoing

Allah's retribution is not impulsive anger but measured justice. He gives the wrongdoer ample time to repent (His name *At-Tawwab* and *Al-Halim* precede this), and only when they persist in oppression and denial does the justice of Al-Muntaqim come into effect. This is a cosmic guarantee that evil will not have the last word — that the tyrant, the oppressor, and the arrogant denier will face consequences that perfectly fit their crimes.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The name appears tied explicitly to the *guilty*: *"...Indeed, We will take retribution from the criminals (innā mina al-mujrimīna muntaqimūn)"* (Qur'an 32:22, 44:16). And of those who reject the messengers: *"But We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers"* (Qur'an 43:25, cf. 43:41). The retribution is always directed at sustained wrongdoing, never at the repentant.

A Name of Hope for the Oppressed

For those crushed by injustice, Al-Muntaqim is a source of profound hope. No oppressor escapes; no tyrant's power shields them forever. The wronged who can find no justice in this world know that Al-Muntaqim will deliver perfect retribution — in this life or the next. This frees the believer from despair and from the temptation to take unjust revenge, entrusting their case to the perfect Avenger.

Living by Al-Muntaqim

- Fear persistent sin. Let this name deter you from injustice and from stubbornly clinging to wrongdoing.
- Hasten to repent. Move from the path of Al-Muntaqim to the embrace of At-Tawwab by returning to Allah quickly.
- Entrust your grievances. When wronged, leave the matter to the perfect Avenger rather than seeking unjust revenge.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Muntaqim, who brings just retribution upon the unrepentant oppressor, protect me from injustice and from persisting in sin, accept my repentance before Your justice falls, and grant relief and justice to all who are wronged."*
