Understanding Ar-Rafi'

Ar-Rafi' is the Exalter, the One who raises and elevates. The root *r-f-'* means to lift, to raise high, to elevate in rank and honour. Allah is Ar-Rafi' when He raises the ranks of the believers, elevates the people of knowledge, lifts the humble who lower themselves for His sake, and exalts whom He wills above others. As the counterpart of Al-Khafid (the Abaser), this name reveals that all true elevation — of status, honour, and station before Allah — comes from a single source: Him alone.

A Name Established by Allah's Acts

Like its pair Al-Khafid, Ar-Rafi' is among the traditionally enumerated names, and the *attribute* of raising is firmly rooted throughout the Qur'an. Allah describes Himself raising ranks: *"We raise in degrees whom We will, and over every possessor of knowledge is one more knowing"* (Qur'an 12:76). He is *"the Exalted in degrees, Owner of the Throne"* (Qur'an 40:15). The raising and lowering of people is His prerogative, exercised with perfect justice and wisdom.

How the Qur'an Shows the Raising

The Qur'an makes clear *who* Allah raises and *why*. He raises the people of faith and knowledge: *"Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees"* (Qur'an 58:11). He raised Prophets above others: *"We raise in degrees whom We will"* (Qur'an 6:83). True elevation, then, is not measured by wealth or fame but by faith, knowledge, and nearness to Allah — a ranking utterly different from the world's.

True Honour and Its Source

A transformative lesson of Ar-Rafi' is that genuine honour cannot be seized; it can only be *granted* by the Exalter. People exhaust themselves climbing for status in the eyes of others, only to find it hollow and fleeting. The believer seeks elevation where it is real: in Allah's sight. And the path to it is paradoxical — through humility. The Prophet ﷺ said, *"Charity does not decrease wealth... and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him"* (Sahih Muslim 2588). The one who lowers himself before Allah is precisely the one Ar-Rafi' lifts.

Living by Ar-Rafi'

- Seek rank where it lasts. Pursue elevation in Allah's sight through faith, knowledge, and good deeds — not status in the eyes of people.
- Climb through humility. Lower yourself for Allah's sake, serve others, and trust the Exalter to raise you.
- Honour those Allah honours. Respect the people of faith and knowledge, for they are the ones Ar-Rafi' has raised.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Ar-Rafi', who raises whom You will by Your grace, elevate me through faith and beneficial knowledge, lift my heart above the love of worldly status, and grant me honour in Your sight and a raised rank in the Hereafter."*
