Understanding At-Tawwab

At-Tawwab is the Ever-Returning, the Acceptor of Repentance. The root *t-w-b* means to return. Remarkably, this name describes a *two-way* turning. First, Allah turns to the servant — granting them the inspiration and ability to repent. Then the servant turns back to Allah in repentance. Then Allah turns to them again — accepting their return and forgiving them. The intensive form *Tawwab* signals that He does this again and again, however many times the servant falls and returns.

The One Who Turns to Us First

A profound truth in this name is that repentance *begins with Allah*. Before a servant repents, Allah has already turned to them — softening their heart, awakening their conscience, opening the door. The Qur'an shows this beautifully with Adam: *"Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful (at-Tawwab ar-Raḥim)"* (Qur'an 2:37). Allah gave Adam the very words with which to repent — His turning preceded Adam's.

The Qur'anic Foundation

Allah affirms that He personally accepts repentance: *"Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants...?"* (Qur'an 9:104). *"...And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful (Tawwab Raḥim)"* (Qur'an 49:12). And He commands repentance and seeking forgiveness as He describes Himself: *"...And ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance (Tawwaba)"* (Qur'an 110:3).

Repentance That Is Always Accepted

The door of At-Tawwab never closes in a lifetime. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah accepts the repentance of the servant until the soul reaches the throat at death, and that Allah stretches out His hand by night to accept the repentant of the day, and stretches out His hand by day to accept the repentant of the night (Sahih Muslim 2759). No matter how many times one falls, sincere return is always met by the One who is *Tawwab* — and He even rejoices at it.

Living by At-Tawwab

- Return immediately. Whenever you sin, turn back at once; the door is open and the return is welcomed.
- Repent often, not just once. Make *tawbah* and istighfar a daily habit, for He accepts repeatedly.
- Accept others' return. Reflect this name by forgiving those who turn back to you and apologise.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, At-Tawwab, who turns to me before I turn to You and accepts my return however often I fall, grant me sincere repentance, accept it from me, and let my final return to You be in a state You are pleased with."*
