Az-Zalzala

Medinan · 8 آية

The earthquake of the Day of Judgement, the earth bearing witness, the reckoning of every atom of good and evil

Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake) is among the shortest surahs in the Quran but among the most theologically dense. Its declaration that on the Day of Judgement, "whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" (99:7–8) is one of the most frequently cited Quranic verses in Islamic ethics. Abdullah ibn Masud reportedly said these two verses are worth more than half the Quran.

Ayah 7–8 ("So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it") establish the principle of absolute divine accounting with no lower threshold of significance. Classical scholars use these verses to reject both spiritual perfectionism (no good is too small to count) and moral complacency (no evil is too small to ignore). Every action, however trivial it seems, is recorded and will be shown to its actor on the Day of Judgement.

The Prophet ﷺ described Az-Zalzalah as equivalent to one quarter of the Quran in one narration, given the weight of its central teaching on accountability. It is one of the most commonly memorised surahs and is widely recited as a reminder of the consequences of actions. The image of the earth itself bearing witness (99:4) is used in Islamic environmental thought to ground moral responsibility toward the physical world.

99:1

When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake

99:2

And the earth discharges its burdens

99:3

And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?" -

99:4

That Day, it will report its news

99:5

Because your Lord has commanded it.

99:6

That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.

99:7

So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,

99:8

And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
