At-Taariq

Meccan · 17 آية

Divine watchfulness over every soul, the power of the returning star, resurrection through divine creative power

At-Tariq (The Morning Star) is a short but theologically dense surah focused on the theme of divine oversight. The oath by the "piercing star" (al-tariq) — interpreted as the morning star whose light pierces the darkness — leads to the declaration that "there is no soul but that it has over it a protector." This establishes the Islamic belief that every human being is constantly in divine view, with no action or thought unobserved.

Ayah 5–7 ("Then let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected, emerging from between the backbone and the ribs") are used by scholars as a Quranic argument for resurrection: the God who created a human being from such an insignificant origin is clearly capable of recreating that same being after death. The biological reference points (backbone and ribs as the region of reproductive organs in ancient anatomy) also established the Quran's engagement with human physiology.

The surah's image of divine protection (at-tariq as a guardian) connects to the Islamic understanding of the recording angels and divine oversight. The closing affirmation that the Quran is "decisive speech and not amusement" (86:13–14) is used in Islamic literary criticism to establish that the Quran's rhetorical excellence serves a communicative and ethical purpose — not aesthetic enjoyment alone.

86:1

By the sky and the night comer -

86:2

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

86:3

It is the piercing star -

86:4

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

86:5

So let man observe from what he was created.

86:6

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

86:7

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

86:8

Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.

86:9

The Day when secrets will be put on trial,

86:10

Then man will have no power or any helper.

86:11

By the sky which returns [rain]

86:12

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

86:13

Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,

86:14

And it is not amusement.

86:15

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

86:16

But I am planning a plan.

86:17

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
