Al-Infitaar
Meccan · 19 آية
The Day of Judgement, the recording angels, the certainty of recompense, human ingratitude
Al-Infitar (The Cleaving) presents the Day of Judgement through four cosmic events: the sky splitting, stars falling, the seas merging, and graves overturning — followed by the judgement of each soul. The surah's question "O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous?" (82:6) is considered one of the most direct Quranic reproaches of human ingratitude and heedlessness.
Ayah 10–12 introduce the concept of the Kiraman Katibin — the honourable recording angels who write every deed: "And indeed, over you are appointed protectors, noble and recording; they know whatever you do." This passage is the primary Quranic basis for the Islamic belief in angels who record deeds, and it directly motivates the Islamic ethical emphasis on being conscious of one's actions at all times, in public and private.

Al-Infitar is recommended alongside At-Takwir and Al-Inshiqaq for deepening awareness of the Day of Judgement. The recording angels (82:10–12) are referenced in the Islamic practice of ending prayers with the rightward and leftward salutation (taslim), which some scholars connect to acknowledging the recording angels on each shoulder. Children are often taught Al-Infitar as part of their introduction to Islamic eschatology.
When the sky breaks apart
And when the stars fall, scattering,
And when the seas are erupted
And when the [contents of] graves are scattered,
A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.
O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,
Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?
In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.
No! But you deny the Recompense.
And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers,
Noble and recording;
They know whatever you do.
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,
And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.
They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense,
And never therefrom will they be absent.
And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allah.
