Meccan · 26 آية
The Overwhelming Day, the punishment of the heedless, the reward of the righteous, signs of creation, accountability
Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming) derives its name from one of the names of the Day of Judgement — the "Overwhelming Event" that covers all creation. The surah presents two vivid contrasting scenes: the faces of the humiliated in Hell (exhausted, scorched, drinking boiling water) and the faces of the tranquil in Paradise (pleased, in elevated gardens, on raised couches). It concludes with the lesson from creation — camels, sky, mountains, earth — leading to the reminder that the Prophet ﷺ is only a reminder, not a controller.
Ayah 21–26 establish the prophetic role with clarity: "So remind; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller." This passage is used by Islamic scholars to distinguish between the obligation of communicating the message (tabligh) and the result of that communication — which belongs to Allah alone. It guards against both forceful imposition of faith and despondency at rejection.
Al-Ghashiyah is recited by the Prophet ﷺ at Eid and Jumu'ah prayers alongside Al-Ala, a Sunnah transmitted in Sahih Muslim. The four signs of creation — camels, sky, mountains, earth (88:17–20) — are used in Islamic science education as an invitation to observe the natural world as an act of worship. The surah's contrast between the two types of faces on Judgement Day is a teaching tool in Islamic eschatological instruction.
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
Working [hard] and exhausted.
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.
With their effort [they are] satisfied
In an elevated garden,
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
Within it is a flowing spring.
Within it are couches raised high
And cups put in place
And cushions lined up
And carpets spread around.
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?
And at the sky - how it is raised?
And at the mountains - how they are erected?
And at the earth - how it is spread out?
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
You are not over them a controller.
However, he who turns away and disbelieves -
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
Indeed, to Us is their return.
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
