Al-Fajr (The Dawn) is distinguished by its powerful series of oaths — by the dawn, the ten nights (of Dhul-Hijjah), the even and the odd, and the departing night — building to a declaration of divine omniscience and justice. The surah presents three historical nations — Aad, Thamud, and Pharaoh's people — as case studies in the divine pattern: honour, trial through excess, transgression, and destruction. It concludes with one of the Quran's most beautiful passages on the "serene soul" (al-nafs al-mutma'innah) returning to Allah in peace.

Ayah 27–30 address the "nafs mutma'innah" (serene soul): "O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing to Him, and enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise." Classical scholars identify this as the highest spiritual station a human soul can reach — one of complete peace through divine relationship, where the soul neither fears nor grieves because its will has become aligned with divine will. This passage is one of the most recited at funerals and in contemplations of the righteous dead.

The ten nights referenced in Ayah 2 are widely understood as the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah, during which the Prophet ﷺ said no good deeds are more beloved to Allah than those performed in this period. This identification makes Al-Fajr especially relevant during Hajj season. The concept of nafs mutma'innah (27–30) became a central concept in Sufi spiritual psychology and in Islamic personality development literature.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالْفَجْرِ 1
By the dawn
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ 2
And [by] ten nights
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ 3
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ 4
And [by] the night when it passes,
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِذِي حِجْرٍ 5
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ 6
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ 7
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ 8
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ 9
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ 10
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ 11
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ 12
And increased therein the corruption.
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ 13
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ 14
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
فَأَمَّا الْإِنْسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ 15
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ 16
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ لَا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ 17
No! But you do not honor the orphan
وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ 18
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَمًّا 19
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا 20
And you love wealth with immense love.
كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا 21
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed -
وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا 22
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنْسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ 23
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي 24
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ 25
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ 26
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ 27
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً 28
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي 29
And enter among My [righteous] servants
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي 30
And enter My Paradise."
