About Surah Ad-Dhuhaa

Meccan · 11 verses

Main Themes

Divine reassurance to the Prophet, the blessings of orphanhood and guidance, gratitude for divine favour

Significance

Ad-Duha (The Morning Hours) was revealed during a period of pause in revelation that deeply distressed the Prophet ﷺ, who feared he had been abandoned by Allah. The surah's opening — "By the morning brightness, and the night when it is still, your Lord has not forsaken you" — is one of the most emotionally comforting passages in the Quran and is recited by Muslims in their own moments of feeling spiritually abandoned or distant from Allah.

Key Verse Explained

Ayah 6–8 remind the Prophet of three divine interventions: "Did He not find you an orphan and gave shelter? And found you lost and guided? And found you poor and made you self-sufficient?" These are presented as evidence that the God who cared for the Prophet in his most vulnerable moments will not abandon him now. Scholars generalise this pattern — divine care in past trials as evidence of divine support in present difficulty — as a framework for maintaining trust in Allah during dark periods.

Related Practices

Ad-Duha is widely recited by Muslims experiencing depression, spiritual dryness, or the feeling of divine abandonment. Scholars recommend pairing it with Ash-Sharh (94) as they were revealed together and share the theme of divine relief after difficulty. The commands that close the surah — not to oppress the orphan, not to repel the petitioner, and to proclaim Allah's blessings — are understood as the practical response to having received divine favour.
