About Surah An-Nasr
Medinan · 3 verses
Main Themes
The conquest of Mecca, masses entering Islam, glorification of Allah, seeking forgiveness as the final message
Significance
An-Nasr (The Divine Support) is widely understood as the last or near-last complete surah revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, signalling the near completion of his mission. Its command to glorify Allah and seek forgiveness — at the moment of greatest worldly success — transforms the conquest of Mecca into a spiritual lesson: worldly achievement is the occasion for greater humility, not pride. The Prophet ﷺ said after receiving this surah that he was being informed of his approaching death.
Key Verse Explained
Ayah 3 ("Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance") is the surah's theological climax. Scholars note the extraordinary wisdom in commanding istighfar at the peak of mission success: it guards against pride ('ujb) and keeps the servant's orientation toward Allah rather than his own achievement. The Prophet ﷺ increased his glorification and seeking of forgiveness noticeably after this revelation.
Related Practices
An-Nasr is among the most memorised surahs and is recited at the end of important undertakings as a reminder to seek forgiveness rather than celebrate one's own role in success. The surah is used in Islamic leadership and da'wah training to teach the principle that success in Allah's cause calls for greater humility and istighfar, not self-congratulation. The phrase "fasabbih bi-hamdi Rabbika wa-staghfir" is a recommended formula after completing any act of worship.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ 1
When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest,
وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا 2
And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes,
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا 3
Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
