Understanding Al-Baqi

Al-Baqi is the Ever-Enduring, the Everlasting, the One who remains. The root *b-q-y* means to remain, endure, and persist. As Al-Baqi, Allah is permanent and eternal — He alone truly remains, while everything else is destined to perish. He has no end, no decline, and no expiry. This name is closely tied to Al-Akhir (the Last) and stands in stark contrast to the fleeting, perishable nature of all creation.

The One Who Remains When All Else Perishes

Everything we see is on its way to passing away. *"Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour"* (Qur'an 55:26–27). *"Everything will be destroyed except His Face"* (Qur'an 28:88). The mountains, the oceans, wealth, power, and our own bodies — all are temporary. Al-Baqi alone endures. To grasp this is to see the world with clear eyes: a passing place, not a permanent one.

The Qur'anic Foundation

Allah contrasts His permanence with the world's transience to redirect our priorities: *"...But what is with Allah is better and more lasting (abqā)"* (Qur'an 20:73, 28:60). And He weighs the fleeting against the enduring: *"Wealth and children are the adornment of the worldly life, but the enduring good deeds (al-bāqiyāt aṣ-ṣāliḥāt) are better to your Lord for reward and better for hope"* (Qur'an 18:46).

Investing in What Endures

The most practical lesson of Al-Baqi is *where to invest your life*. Energy poured into the perishable — accumulating what we cannot keep — ultimately slips away. But deeds done for the Ever-Enduring endure forever in reward: the *bāqiyāt ṣāliḥāt* (lasting good deeds) such as prayer, charity, and remembrance. The wise believer trades the fleeting for the lasting, attaching their heart and their efforts to the One who remains.

Living by Al-Baqi

- Invest in the enduring. Prioritise the lasting good deeds over the perishable gains of this world.
- Hold the temporary loosely. Enjoy the world's blessings without being enslaved to what will pass.
- Attach your heart to the Everlasting. Love and rely on the One who will never leave you.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Baqi, who remains when all else perishes, attach my heart to what endures with You, let me fill my life with lasting good deeds, and do not let me waste my days chasing what will pass away."*
