Understanding An-Nur
An-Nur is the Light — the source of all light in existence. The root *n-w-r* means light and illumination. As An-Nur, Allah is the One who illuminates the heavens and the earth: the source of physical light (the sun, stars, and every glow), the light of guidance that illuminates the mind, and the spiritual light of faith that brings life and clarity to the heart. Without Him, all would be darkness — in the world and in the soul.
The Light of the Heavens and the Earth
The Qur'an's most famous verse about this name is the *Verse of Light*: *"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp... Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills..."* (Qur'an 24:35). This light is guidance — the illumination by which hearts find their way to the truth. The whole verse is a meditation on how Allah lights the path of the believer.
The Qur'anic Foundation
Allah describes the Day of Judgement as illuminated by Him: *"And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord"* (Qur'an 39:69). And He likens guidance itself to being given light to walk by: *"Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge from it?"* (Qur'an 6:122). Faith is light; misguidance is darkness.
Light for the Heart
The believer's deepest need is for the *light of the heart* — clarity, guidance, and faith that dispels the darkness of doubt, confusion, and sin. The Prophet ﷺ would supplicate at length for this: *"O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight... and make me light"* (Sahih Muslim 763). When the heart is lit by An-Nur, the path becomes clear, decisions become guided, and the world's confusions lose their power to mislead.
Living by An-Nur
- Seek His light. Ask An-Nur to illuminate your heart, your sight, and your path, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
- Walk by the light of revelation. The Qur'an is described as light — let it guide your steps out of darkness.
- Avoid the darkness of sin. Sin dims the heart's light; obedience and remembrance increase it.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, An-Nur, Light of the heavens and the earth, place light in my heart, my hearing, my sight, before me and behind me; illuminate my path with guidance, and make me of the people of light on the Day I meet You."*
