Understanding Al-Qadir
Al-Qadir is the All-Able, the One of complete and absolute power. The root *q-d-r* means power, ability, and capacity, and also measure and decree. As Al-Qadir, Allah has perfect power over all things — He can do whatever He wills, in the way He wills, with no effort, no limit, and no possibility of failure. What is impossible for all of creation combined is effortless for Al-Qadir; for Him there are no obstacles, only His will and the word *"Be."*
Power Over All Things
The Qur'an's most frequent declaration of this attribute rings out dozens of times: *"...and Allah is over all things competent (wa Allahu 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir)"* (e.g. Qur'an 2:20). "All things" is comprehensive — there is no exception, no category beyond His ability. This is power without the limits that define every created power: it never tires, never falls short, and is never resisted.
The Qur'anic Foundation
Allah grounds belief in the resurrection on this name: *"Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able (Qadir) to create the likes of them? Yes, indeed; and He is the Knowing Creator"* (Qur'an 36:81). And: *"Does that One not have the power (bi-Qadir) to give life to the dead?"* (Qur'an 75:40). The One who built the cosmos can surely raise the dead — His ability has no ceiling.
When You Think Something Impossible
The most uplifting fruit of Al-Qadir is hope in the face of the "impossible." When a situation seems beyond repair, a goal beyond reach, or a hardship beyond escape, the believer remembers that they are asking the One who is *Qadir* over all things. No du'a is too big for Him, no knot too tangled for Him to undo, no door too locked for Him to open. The limits are in our perception, never in His power.
Living by Al-Qadir
- Ask for the "impossible." Bring Al-Qadir your biggest needs; nothing is hard for Him.
- Never despair of relief. However stuck a situation seems, the All-Able can change it in an instant.
- Walk humbly with power. Remember that any ability you have is a measured gift from the All-Able.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Qadir, who has power over all things, for whom nothing is impossible, change my hardship into ease, open for me what seems closed, and let my hope in Your power never waver."*
