A Name to Know Allah By
As-Sami' is the All-Hearing — the One who hears all things, perfectly and simultaneously. His hearing is unlike ours: it is not limited by distance, drowned by noise, or confined to sound waves. He hears the loudest declaration and the faintest whisper, the spoken word and the unspoken prayer of the heart, the cry of every creature in every language, all at once, without one sound masking another. Nothing said — or merely felt — escapes the hearing of As-Sami'.
The Reach of His Hearing
The Qur'an stretches our imagination to grasp this attribute. When the Prophet Musa and his brother Harun feared confronting Pharaoh, Allah reassured them: *"Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see (asma'u wa ara)"* (Qur'an 20:46). His hearing accompanies and protects His servants in their most frightening moments.
A striking proof of the intimacy of His hearing is the woman who came to the Prophet ﷺ pleading about her husband, speaking quietly. Aisha رضي الله عنها said she could barely make out the words in the same room — yet Allah heard her from above the seven heavens and revealed an entire passage: *"Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing"* (Qur'an 58:1). The chapter is named Al-Mujadilah — "The Woman Who Disputes" — a permanent testament that As-Sami' hears the faintest voice of the weakest petitioner.
Joined to His Seeing
As-Sami' is almost always paired in the Qur'an with Al-Basir (the All-Seeing): *"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing (as-Sami' al-Basir)"* (Qur'an 42:11). Hearing and seeing together affirm that Allah perceives every dimension of our lives — what we say and what we do, the outward and the inward.
What This Name Plants in the Heart
Knowing Allah as As-Sami' transforms both speech and supplication. It guards the tongue: the one certain that every word is heard avoids backbiting, lies, and foul speech. And it fills du'a with hope and presence: there is no need to despair that a prayer goes unheard, for As-Sami' hears every call, including the silent ache of the heart that finds no words. When Ibrahim and Isma'il raised the foundations of the Ka'bah, they prayed, *"Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing"* (Qur'an 2:127) — naming As-Sami' as they asked for acceptance.
Living by As-Sami'
- Guard your tongue. Speak as one who knows every word reaches the All-Hearing.
- Pour out your du'a. Call upon As-Sami' with certainty that He hears you — aloud or in silence, in any language, at any time.
- Listen well to others. Reflect a sliver of this attribute by truly hearing the needs and pains of those around you.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, As-Sami', who hears every voice and every silent plea, hear my supplication and answer it, guard my tongue from all that displeases You, and let me never doubt that You are listening."*
