A Name to Know Allah By

Al-Basit is the Expander, the One who opens the hand wide in generosity. The root *b-s-ṭ* means to spread out, to extend, to enlarge — the very opposite of the constriction of Al-Qabid. Allah is Al-Basit when He expands provision, eases difficulties, widens the chest with faith and contentment, and pours out blessing upon whom He wills. The two names form an inseparable pair: the Withholder and the Expander are one Lord, whose single hand both restrains and gives according to flawless wisdom.

The Hand That Opens Wide

The expansion of Al-Basit reaches every dimension of life. He expands *rizq* — wealth, opportunity, and means. He expands the *heart* — the *sharḥ as-ṣadr*, the openness and light that He granted His Prophet ﷺ: *"Did We not expand for you your breast?"* (Qur'an 94:1). And He expands *relief* after hardship, for *"with hardship comes ease"* (Qur'an 94:6). Whoever feels constricted in any way turns to the One who alone can broaden their circumstances and their soul.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an pairs the two acts directly: *"And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance (Allahu yaqbiḍu wa yabsuṭ)"* (Qur'an 2:245). And it clarifies that this expansion follows His wisdom, not human merit alone: *"Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts it. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing"* (Qur'an 17:30). And again: *"He extends provision for whom He wills and restricts it. Indeed He is, of all things, Knowing"* (Qur'an 42:12). Abundance is a gift apportioned by knowledge and wisdom, not a reward to be demanded.

Abundance as a Trust

A crucial lesson of Al-Basit is that expansion is itself a test. The Qur'an reminds us that wide provision is not always a sign of Allah's pleasure, just as constriction is not always His displeasure — both are tests. *"And as for when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, My Lord has humiliated me. No!"* (Qur'an 89:16–17). The one given abundance is entrusted with it: to be grateful, to spend in good, and not to let plenty breed arrogance or heedlessness.

- Ask the Expander for relief. When constricted in means or in spirit, turn to Al-Basit to widen your provision and open your heart.
- Hold abundance as a trust. When given plenty, respond with gratitude and generosity, not pride — share what the Expander has spread to you.
- Read both names together. Trust that the same Lord who withholds is the One who gives, and that both are wrapped in wisdom.
